Piling Pipe
Pipe piling is simple and easy to understand. A steel pipe structure is driven into the ground with large impact hammers. The pipe piles remain in place primarily through friction with the soil. Pipe pile designs can vary depending on the ground conditions and support expectations of the project. Steel pipe piling can handle extremely heavy loads. Depending on the weight of the load the structure will be holding, you can get many different strengths of pipe for your piles.

Freight
Freight is one of the most important aspects of having a successful company in the steel business. Getting our product to job sites is not just a must, but is crucial that it's there on time for our customers so we are not the reason of delaying jobs.
Getting pipe to the job site on time not only keeps the customer happy, but builds trust between you and them as well. The best way to make sure you can be relied on is teaming with a few great freight brokers. These guys can make or break you to your best customers. Having a good relationship with a few different freight brokers makes your life in this industry so much easier. Freight seems like it might not be at the top of the list as far as importance, but to us it means everything to keeping customer relationships and a strong company overall.

Spring Floods in the Midwest 2019
The spring of 2019 in the Midwest has been a crazy one for millions of people. Record flooding is now threatening the safety of more than a million private water wells. The National Ground Water Association estimates that people living in more than 300 counties across 10 states are going to have their groundwater threatened from bacterial and industrial contamination carried by flood waters. This very well could turn into a national emergency.
This flooding very well may spark an upturn in the demand for water well casing and the construction for damaged infrastructure like bridges and overpasses.
Alpha Pipe is able to help in the rebuild process for any damages. We also sell water well casing to many private drillers that then provide the wells for many of these people in need.
Everyone at Alpha Pipe hopes that things can stay under control as much as possible, but we are here to help provide solutions for many problems if that time comes.
Different Grades of Carbon Steel Pipe
There are many different grades when talking about carbon steel pipe. Being knowledgeable about different grades of steel pipe is very important when bidding a job or trying to land a job for your company. Let's say your company is bidding a piling job, it would not be in your best interest to quote a steel pipe grade that was more costly to purchase. If you know the different grades of carbon steel pipe before going into a bid, you give your company a better chance at landing the job. Here at Alpha Pipe, we mostly deal in structural grades of pipe. Different grades of pipe have different yield and tensile strengths and are produced for different applications. Below, I will go over some of the grades that Alpha Pipe stocks on a regular basis.
Piling grades - ASTM A252 GR2, ASTM A252 GR3, and ASTM A500 GRB & GRC. All of these grades come in straight seam and spiral weld. Each meets a different strength that some jobs require.
Line pipe grades - X42, X52, X60, and X70. These also can come in straight seam or spiral weld. A lot of time, we can find this pipe and put it into stock for great deals. We will substitute these grades for anything structural because it usually meets or exceeds the strength that our customer is looking for.
Casing grades - J55, N80, and P110. These grades are normally used for down hole applications. We will keep some of this type of pipe in stock for our smaller drillers and pile drivers.
We carry other grades of steel pipe as well, but these are some that we use the most. If you are needing a quote for a job, Alpha Pipe would love to try and save you money. Piling Pipe and Deep Foundations
Pipe piling has been used in the construction world for a very long time, but started becoming more popular around 35 years ago. Many tests were able to demonstrate how effective pipe piling is in load bearing situations. Since then, the construction companies have been utilizing piling pipe all over the industry. If your job involves heavy loads or deep foundation structures, you need to know about pipe piling. Below will explain the how piling works and how it can be used for best results in civil construction and deep foundation applications.
Piling pipe can be driven in many different ways, but here at Alpha Pipe, we think this is the most effective way in most situations: A steel pipe is driven into the ground, typically with large impact hammers. The piling stays in place because of the friction with the soil. The pile designs can be different depending on the ground conditions and load bearing requirements on different job sites. Since the piling is made of steel pipe, they can handle extremely heavy loads.
For any structure that is going to be holding up a maximum load, a deep foundation is the only way to go. Structural support for deep foundations can be achieved in many ways, but steel pipe piles are the strongest and best to use in our opinion. Pipe piling can be tailored to exact load specifications with the many different piling pipe specifications that are available to the consumer. Piling pipe can also be very cost effective compared to other types of piling in the construction industry. Pipe piling is much more cost effective to put to length than other types of piling, plus for DOT type jobs, they can be easily inspected before the pipe is driven into the ground.
If you need steel pipe for a piling application, please give us a call here at Alpha Pipe . We would love to help you with all of your structural steel pipe needs.

Culvert Grade Steel Pipe
Many companies feel culvert grade pipe is useless and only scrap steel. Here at Alpha Pipe we love taking culvert pipe into our inventory. We have many different uses for it and have sold hundreds of truck loads over the years of all different sizes of culvert grade pipe.
Alpha Pipe defines culvert grade pipe as having one or all of these characteristics: slight bows, dings, or dents along with pitting in the steel. The most sought after culvert sizes are 24", 30", and 36" pipe. We have also sold culvert in sizes as small as 6 5/8" and as large as 48" pipe. Depending on what the job is for is what size the customer uses or buys for their job site.
There are many different job uses for culvert pipe. Some of the most common would be for drainage, cattle troughs, creek crossings, and flume pipe on construction sites for heavy machinery to run over so they do not get stuck in the mud.
If your company has any steel pipe that has already been used for a job and would consider useless, maybe we both have a chance to make a little money off of it. Give us a call and we will take a hard look at paying you for what you might of thought was worthless. Alpha Pipe is always looking to recycle steel to help save companies money.
United States New Steel Tariffs
One of the major stories circulating the world right now is how will the new implemented tariffs on imported steel and aluminum impact us as a nation and our economy? There are so many different opinions when it comes to President Trump's new steel and aluminum tariffs. Personally, I don't think that question is easily answered right now, as we have to see what happens over time, but I do have a few reasons why I think it will be a good thing for a company like Alpha Pipe.
Right around 1/3 of all steel used in the United States is imported per year. Private construction jobs were known for taking recycled (used) or surplus steel to help save on cost, but that has changed over the past 3-5 years. The used/surplus pipe market is one that Alpha Pipe has built a strong base on. We help companies all around North America save money on job costs by selling them used or surplus steel for their job sites. This has become much harder to do since China and other countries can import their steel at such cheap rates. The past 5 or so years, our used pipe has been competing with imported new prime pipe. As you can imagine, many companies would rather have the new prime imported pipe over the recycled/used pipe since the prices are very comparable. Because of that, the market for recycled/used pipe has shrunk immensely.
Once the new tariffs are set in place, there are many new opportunities for Alpha Pipe to sell our used inventory to different construction companies. At this point, our pricing looks much more desirable and far below the imported steel competition. We think with the tariffs coming into place, that Alpha Pipe will be able to go back to our roots and start selling much more used pipe again.
Recycling Steel Pipe
The practice of refurbishing used steel pipe is a type of recycling that most people don't think about. There are thousands of miles of underground pipe in place all across the U.S. A big part of Alpha Pipe's business is partnering with pipeline contractors to take up pipelines which are not being used. When the pipe is dug up out of the ground, Alpha Pipe is on site to cut, clean and sort the pipe. This pipe is then resold for various uses: pipe piling, casing pipe, trestle, falsework, drainage, culvert pipe, irrigation - just to name a few.
This pipe has usually been in service for a number of years and needs to be replaced for various reasons. The fact that it might not be a good fit for it's original intention doesn't mean that the pipe cannot be used for many different applications. The pipe is still strong and Alpha Pipe sorts their used pipe to make sure that any pipe that is damaged or aged beyond use is scrapped.
A lot of companies can save money by choosing used steel pipe for their construction needs. The average savings over using new steel pipe ranges from 30% to 50%.
Does this make Alpha Pipe Co a "green" company - YES we think it does. Alpha Pipe is here to help you understand how to consider used steel pipe as an alternate for all of your steel pipe needs.
Here are a few pictures of used pipe from pipeline take-up jobs:
As you can see, this pipe is still in great condition and ready to be used again.
What do you think of using used steel pipe as an alternate to new pipe in order to not only be "Green" but save money?
